Thoughts???

Mystery Quilts Anonymous

I have been in contact with a number of fabric manufacturers and I wanted your opinion on something... I am wondering if you think I should offer kits for our mysteries. If I offered something like that, would you purchase the kit or would you order your own fabrics? I would organise the kit with the manufacturer and you would order direct from them (at least, that's what I am working toward right now). I have heaps of ideas in my head...offering the kits in more than one colourway, including binding yardage, even using fat quarter (or other pre-cuts) packs for scrappy looks....

If you already have a stash like mine, you may not want to order for a specific quilt. But, I would love to make it available for you. If you can think of any other way I can make this easier for you, please please please let me know. I have a stash that will outlive me, so I am sharing mine with my granddaughters (and those grandsons that want to sew) and we use it together, I STILL love to buy fabric though, so I would definitely order kits.

I would also love to hear your favourite fabric manufacturers, even your go-to lines if possible. I am excited to take another step to help you on your journey (to help me on OUR journey)!

Time to get off here and get busy for today!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts! Have an amazing week!

I love us,
Deb

  1. I also have a stash that will out live me so I would be more likely to shop my stash unless, I really, really loved the fabric in the kit.

  2. It's wonderful that you would like to set up kits for us although I would probably use fabric from my stash. I would hate to commit to you, have you commit to the fabric manufacturers and then use my stash fabric. You might then end up with a bunch of excess fabric.

  3. I now have a stash but I also like kits as some nice fabrics are only available in them. I have made some lovely quilts from kits and learned how to put colours together. I live in Ireland and we are hammered by our tax department for importing from some sites. They have a grest system for collecting this tax, u cannot get ur parcel if you dont pay at the door and you also add on 10e for the postman. It has stopped me from lots of sites. Tax is added at 30% for off shore purchases.

    1. Sounds like the NZ tax system. Trying to make it easy sounds like it’s just too expensive.

  4. I have an amazing stash and will look there first. 😊 My quilts are one of a kind.
I think kits are a great idea for those that like them.

  5. I have a relatively controlled stash. I would also like to keep it that way. For me however ordering a kit coming from Ew Zealand or even the USA would not make a lot of economic sense as it has to get to Canada and shipping can be expensive. I think the hints you give people before each quilt is started helps everyone to understand colour and values very well so that they can shop their stash with confidence.

    1. Thank you so much. I agree that things shipped in are very expensive. I know that New Zealand doesn't produce much fabric at all, so we always have to import. Makes our fabric VERY EXPENSIVE, so I completely understand!

  6. What about having fabric manufacturers offering discounts if we mention your name and you could also benefit from them because you’d be promoting them . . I would be more willing to add to my stash over a pre cut kit.

    1. Ok, This is a SUPER idea. I do have one quilt shop willing to offer a discount to our group which is a super step in the right direction!

  7. I prefer to use my own color choices that you may not have with a kit. I think the newer quilters that may not have the confidence to choose their own colors would lean toward a kit.

    1. Personally, I haven't bought a kit in several years, I am thinking now that maybe a discount to our members for purchasing from certain manufacturers may be better.

  8. I have a moratorium on fabric purchasing...way too much stash and not enough years to make a dent.

    1. We are twinsies!! I will never need to buy fabric, but I still love it!

    2. Kits are a lifesaver for newbies, but shipping worldwide might make them too expensive. The discount idea works, but you’d need one company for each country to save shipping and taxes, etc.

  9. I have no stash to shop ... yet. The price of kits has kept me from using them so far. I'm in the US so not certain how that would work but if the price is right and the colors make me happy I would buy.

  10. I have a huge stash and I like the fact that we are able to get patterns and ideas from you without having to pay ]! We are so fortunate to have you designing for us!

  11. I have purchased several kits that I have seen and liked, have have been happy with them. I usually like to buy additional yardage in case I would like to make a larger border. I also like that some kit producers are generous with the yardage in case you have a mistake. Also some sell an additional "Boo Boo pack".
I do usually wait though until the kits I like go on sale, as they seem to be priced very high.
I would like to use my stash more but I never seem to have the correct yardage for what I am trying to accomplish.

  12. Hi! Debi - I am typing with 1 finger as I broke my wrist in 2 places recently so excuse the spelling errors. I an wondering how many members are local versus international - from Canada I can no longer afford the international rates to purchase fabric - so trying to keep within Canada. Even the USA dollar is currently high. I have never bought kits as I usually use more fabric then the pattern says due to extra borders that I like to do. I am thinking how you could be reimbursed for your efforts.....do you have access to Etzy.com - perhaps you could offer your patterns free only for a limited time, then remove them from facebook and sell them on Etzy. I know Etzy is avail in US and Canada. I know you would be successful your patterns are beautiful they just won't be mysteries. Just thinking out loud. Fondest regards Diane

  13. I have a stash that I shop from and am currently on a very limited budget so a kit would be out of the question regardless of the price....

  14. I would purchase kits but too am in the USA sooooooo perhaps there might be a distributor here that might team with you to order from in the states. It would keep kit cost lower as shipping costs would not cost more than the kit itself.
