I am very interested in how you store your scraps...if you use them and the sizes you cut your larger scraps down to. I keep a bin of crumbs, a bin of anything under a fat quarter, plastic shoe boxes with my 2-1/2" strips and squares by colour, and that doesn't include the fabrics between a quarter yard and one yard.  I am very keen to hear what you do. I need help organising this large selection of scraps! I make every quilt that I put on our Facebook page and others as well....I have SO MANY SCRAPS!

    If I can get a 6 1/2 piece that is what I cut to. then a 5 inch piece 3 1/2 and 2 1/2. nothing smaller. I also cut 1 1/2 inch strips and 2 1/2 strips if there is enough but no shorter than 12 inches. I also cut a lot of 2 1/2 inch square which I use a lot of as beginners and enders. The 6 1/2 and 5 inch pieces I make pinwheels or hourglass combined with a solid background fabric, the scrap pile never seems to get any smaller and I belong to two guilds and both know I love the scraps. When making a half square triangle I sew two lines and cut between the sewn lines and the smallest piece I also use. nothing smaller than a 1 1/2 finished piece. They all make beautiful comfort quilts.

    Anything smaller than a FQ gets cut up into strips, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, what ever I can get out of them. If I have weird shape pieces I cut into squares, same sizes. I have a 9 cube unit, and each cube has a size to it.

      My plastic "shoe boxes" are all labeled, but I went overboard on the 2-1/2" things!! I really need to just breathe and get more shoe boxes!

    ahh scraps, how we have a love/hate relationship with them! I use Bonnie Hunters scrap saver system. sorted by size,,for me I put everything narrower than 1 1/2" into my string bin, then sort every 1/2" i.e. 1 1/2', 2', 2 1/2', etc to 5" then 6 1/2" and over 7" when it's big enough to be a FQ I store with FQ's if bigger than 1/2 yd. I put it back into my yardage cupboard

    I usually cut in 2.5 inch squares. Am working on a “heart” quilt. Each block has 45 - 2.5 in squares and 4 - HST. Dark colors are the heart. Light colors around the heart

      I love this...thinking I can use this an leader/ender blocks because I can just pull from the scrap bin!

    OMGosh! I have a muliplicity of textile remnants and discards. They have taken it upon themselves to reproduce even in the darkened and enclosed spaces of totes, bags and a closet. After I work on a scrap quilt the little b-----ds never go into their original home but seem to cling to every available surface in my sewing room. One cheeky one found his way to the store by hanging to my shirt! The nerve!

    If you find a miracle for living with these little creatures I implore you to let me know.

  Mystery Quilts Anonymous   I wanted to add the poem to our blog. I love this poem and it is how I feel when I am "working" with you. I love sewing beside you and with you in this journey. There is no one I would rather be sewing with than ALL of YOU! I wanted this poem here so we can always come back and read it. I have made some amazing friends along the way. As we start Kindred Spirits today, our celebration quilt for achieving 5,000 members, I am amazed at our one year (plus a bit) history. Choosing Fabrics, Not Everyone’s Favourite!

Mystery Quilts Anonymous Sometimes my favourite part, sometimes a chore...picking fabrics and colours can be fun and rewarding. I have a pretty good sized stash, but do we ever really have that PERFECT match that we want unless we’ve bought the entire line??  I know there are those who won’t use one manufacturer with a different manufacturer in the same quilt, I truly don’t have that option. Fabric where I live is quite expensive ($35+ per metre) so I have to mix manufacturers all the time. Although, I will only use 100% cotton in my quilts. I will also use flannel and shirting, as long as it’s 100% cotton. I don’t like to mix flannel and quilting cotton as they shrink at different rates.   Here are two examples of a couple of quilts I have on the drawing board.
